"What do I do?" People ask this question and are a little confused, well I build timber frames, sometimes referred to as post and beam, I also repair and restore barns and other old timber frames using traditional techniques and methods. Back in the 19th century I would just be called a carpenter but these days that would not do justice to the complicated work timber framers do. The methods I use are from that period and beyond, being the oldest continually practised building type, include producing a hand finished frame using mortice and tenon joints and held together with hand made wooden pegs. I welcome the opportunity to help preserve our heritage in this way.
The repair and restoration of old barns is perhaps the most common work I do and I have learned several ways of achieving this and leaving the structure looking original as possible.
The picture on the right shows that I do cut new frames as well as restoration work. Custom designs can be created using a CAD program called DeltaCad. Latest drawing tool to come on board is Google Sketchup which is good for demonstrating a 3d view of the structure. Examples of barns and my work are shown on following pages.
Following a recent request I am now selling copies of plans of "Whitney Frame", a cross section of this frame is shown below...note there is no overhang on eaves, this design allows for the SIP panels to meet and form a perfect seal between walls and roof. The SIPs themselves will create the overhang. One customer has already bought my plans and has cut a beautiful copy of my Whitney Frame in his own time, this is testament to the detail of the plans and simplicity of the design as well as of course the will and determination of the customer to learn and cut his own frame. I would encourage this at every opportunity as it just helps to perpetuate the timber framing industry and show just how good a structure they are.

Having crossed the North Anna at Jericho Ford, the 155th Pa Vols arms were stacked, and preparations made for supper, when the enemy, who' had been lurking in concealment, made a most vigorous and determined assault. The excellent discipline of the troops served them admirably in this hour of need. Though taken unawares, and with a swift flowing stream at their backs, they flew to arms, and gave the foe such a reception as soon convinced him that he had no laurels to win from them. |
